Felt Scarf workshop

On this two and a half hour workshop you will make a fine merino scarf, marbled with silk, to your own colour choice. The workshop requires no previous knowledge of felt making so is suitable for both the new and more experienced maker. Come along for a morning, learn a new skill and leave with a beautiful wrap to enhance your own or a friend's wardrobe!

All materials are included in the price.

Felt Bags

During this four hour workshop you will make your individual handbag from merino fibre using the technique of seamless felt making.

You will choose from a variety of styles and shapes, adding other fibres to create textural effects, and will choose your own colour scheme.

The workshop is suitable for every skill level, and all materials are included.

Felt form and colour

On this workshop you will depart from the concept of ‘felt for function' and begin to explore the expressive possibilities of felt. Allowing yourself to learn and appreciate how the colours and textures combine, you will cut and sculpt your own ‘prefelts' to form two and three dimensional pieces, celebrating and building on the unique qualities of the material you're working with.

Long fingerless gloves

Using the technique of seamless felt making you will design and make a pair of long, lacy, fingerless felt gloves. Keeping your colours simple you can produce a fine, stylish pair for evening wear, or go for a brighter, more funky choice for everyday use! All materials provided.

Felt Bracelet

Felt Jewellery

On this workshop you will design and make necklaces, bracelets, pendants and flowers in fine or chunky felt based on your own design ideas. Lots of lovely samples will inspire your work and full guidance will be given using methods of wet and dry needle felt making. Emphasis is laid on a professional finish. Basic materials and some beads are provided.

Felt Hats

This one day workshop will teach you a basic felt hat making technique to produce a high quality hat, which will then be blocked, styled and trimmed by you, to a design of your choice. Full guidance and all materials will be provided.

During this workshop you will be working with prefelt and a wide range of fibres, fabrics and yarns.

You will design a hanging based on floral imagery incorporating techniques to create 3 dimensional effects. This workshop involves wet felting & dry needle felting.

Specially for spring, this workshop guides you through the construction of a stylish fabric hat, perfect for the warmer weather! Some basic sewing skills preferable, all materials provided.

Under Jeanette's expert guidance, design your own fascinator to wear for an occasion or as a present for a special friend. If possible please bring old pieces of recycled jewellery and buttons from your button box with you. This will give your fascinator an even more personal touch. Head pieces will be worked from sinamay and fabrics, and decorated with hand sculpted leaves, flowers, feathers, jewellery and more...
 
  There are many colours of sinamay to choose from and samples will be on show to guide your work.

'This new and exciting workshop is all about seamless clothing, but you will be making your individual garment on a small scale! The emphasis will be on surface design, details such as collars and pockets and on achieving a high quality finish.

Chunky Wall Hangings

 

Working with a wide range of fleece, fibres and textures, you will design and construct a robust piece of flat felt using the washing machine.

This technique allows you to use the fleece as it comes off the sheep in combination with more commercially prepared fibres to produce a beautiful wall hanging.

No previous experience necessary and all materials are provided.

Silk paper making

You will learn two methods of silk paper making. The first with gummed silks where the fibres are bonded through heat process, in our case, an iron. You will learn how to emboss the paper with natural patterns such as leafs & textured fabrics. The second more well known method uses wallpaper paste to make stronger & thicker paper.

Card will be provided so we can make up greetings cards or bookmarks as an end product.

Millinery Spring School

This year spring millinery school will provide an opportunity to explore millinery from the 1940s and 50s.

You will look at hats and headpieces using traditional styles and techniques, (hand sewing skills required).

You will study some original pieces and develop a personal response.

Over the three days you will gain skills required for blocking and shaping buckram, wiring, draping, lining and trimming and make two resolved hats/headpieces, one from buckram and fabric, the other – a cocktail hat – from sinamay. All basic material is included in the fee.

The course guarantees a small class size with lots of individual tuition to realize design ideas.

'Collars and Cuffs'

During this 1 day workshop you will make a flamboyant collar piece in the morning and later you will create a pair of lacy cuffs.

Scarf Making

This one day class has been developed from the half day workshop due to popular demand.

On it you will make two scarves. In the morning you will use the cobweb technique, working with two colours of merino and silk fibres as surface decoration. In the afternoon, by contrast you will use coloured pre felt in a choice of hand dyed colours which you will cut and collage to your own design.

A workshop exploring how to use techniques such as ripping, slashing, layering, bonding, gathering and stitch to create exciting new textured fabrics. You will be introduced to the use of an embellisher. Students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine or embellisher.

This class will introduce you to the basics of wet felting in the morning producing a base on which to work with your needle in the afternoon. Using a wide range of coloured prefelts, yarns and fibres as your palette you will design and build a landscape of your choice.

Blocking Felt Hats

Using industrially produced cones, you will be blocking your hat on wooden hat blocks. The process involves steaming, blocking, wiring & finally trimming. We have a selection of blocks for you to choose from.

This workshop is suitable for beginners.

Felted Shibori Scarf

Shibori is a traditional Japanese technique used to resist-dye textiles through tie-dye, stitch-dye, fold-dye, pole wrap-dye, etc. 3D form is then produced through folding, crumpling, stitching, plaiting plucking or twisting, secured by binding or knotting.

In the workshop, participants will be working with white prefelt to create a sample and then a scarf, which will be bound, dyed and overdyed in order to achieve a range of colour mixes and a three dimensional texture.

Jeanette's studio offers a creative, spacious and inspiring environment in which to learn, collaborate and relax.

The workshop is suitable for both beginners and those with experience in the field of textiles and felt making.

Lunch: Please bring your own lunch or visit Hatters just across the road for quality soup and sandwiches.

Sinamay hats - free-form

On this 1 day course you will learn to block a sinamay crown & to create a free form brim using pattern cutting as a starting point. You will be shown how to wire your hat & to apply petersham professionally.

The final part of the day is dedicated to trimming your creation.
