Felt Scarf workshop

On this two and a half hour workshop you will make a fine merino scarf, marbled with silk, to your own colour choice. The workshop requires no previous knowledge of felt making so is suitable for both the new and more experienced maker. Come along for a morning, learn a new skill and leave with a beautiful wrap to enhance your own or a friend's wardrobe!

All materials are included in the price.

Felt Bags

During this four hour workshop you will make your individual handbag from merino fibre using the technique of seamless felt making.

You will choose from a variety of styles and shapes, adding other fibres to create textural effects, and will choose your own colour scheme.

The workshop is suitable for every skill level, and all materials are included.

Felt form and colour

On this workshop you will depart from the concept of ‘felt for function' and begin to explore the expressive possibilities of felt. Allowing yourself to learn and appreciate how the colours and textures combine, you will cut and sculpt your own ‘prefelts' to form two and three dimensional pieces, celebrating and building on the unique qualities of the material you're working with.

Long fingerless gloves

Using the technique of seamless felt making you will design and make a pair of long, lacy, fingerless felt gloves. Keeping your colours simple you can produce a fine, stylish pair for evening wear, or go for a brighter, more funky choice for everyday use! All materials provided.

Miniature Jacket with knitted surface design

'This new and exciting workshop is all about seamless clothing, but you will be making your individual garment on a small scale! The emphasis will be on surface design, details such as collars and pockets and on achieving a high quality finish.

Once you have mastered the techniques involved you will be ready to scale up your design to a life sized, wearable garment'.

Chunky Wall Hangings

Working with a wide range of fleece, fibres and textures, you will design and construct a robust piece of flat felt using the washing machine.

This technique allows you to use the fleece as it comes off the sheep in combination with more commercially prepared fibres to produce a beautiful wall hanging.

No previous experience necessary and all materials are provided.

Silk paper making
Silk paper with Montbretia flower petals

You will learn two methods of silk paper making. The first with gummed silks where the fibres are bonded through heat process, in our case, an iron. You will learn how to emboss the paper with natural patterns such as leafs & textured fabrics. The second more well known method uses wallpaper paste to make stronger & thicker paper.

Card will be provided so we can make up greetings cards or bookmarks as an end product.

Millinery Spring School

Red cap with black trim & feathers

This year spring millinery school will provide an opportunity to explore millinery from the 1940s and 50s.

You will look at hats and headpieces using traditional styles and techniques, (hand sewing skills required).

Hat table with wood & polystyrene blocks
  Red ‘airline’ band

You will study some original pieces and develop a personal response.

Over the three days you will gain skills required for blocking and shaping buckram, wiring, draping, lining and trimming and make two resolved hats/headpieces, one from buckram and fabric, the other – a cocktail hat – from sinamay. All basic material is included in the fee.

The course guarantees a small class size with lots of individual tuition to realize design ideas.
