Brainchild of internationally renowned textile artist Jeanette Sendler and pioneering painter and art educator Alison Mountain, the Hat in the Cat started life in November 2007 in a small shop at 60A High Street in the North Fife Village of Newburgh, where Jeanette and Alison both live and do much of their creative work. The previous tenant had been a cat charity, and the new ones planned to sell hats, so no prizes for guessing where the name came from!
The shop, with its eye-catching Red Topper sign hanging outside, soon became a popular venue, both for browsing its unique ranges of fashion clothing and jewellery and for a cup of coffee and a blether but it was too small to accommodate our long term plans, and it wasn't long before we were on the move to Perth, first to 50 George Street and then to our new premises at 2 Main Street, Bridgend, where in addition to our mouth-watering selections of unique, handcrafted hats, knitwear and felt accessories, we now have the space to offer an exciting range of workshops for anyone interested in designing or making their own items.
The Hat in the Cat is a Social Enterprise supported by the Social Economy Partnership and we are deeply committed to both social inclusivity and eco-friendly principles. Our workshops are specifically designed to be accessible to the widest possible spectrum of abilities, and our raw materials will be sourced from small suppliers and woollen mills. Whenever possible we will make use of offcuts and other waste products rather than let them go to landfill.
Shop hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10.00 - 17.30. We look forward to seeing you! |
